Some things to consider when researching a mutual fund:
1. What is the long term track record and how did the fund fare in a Bear Market? How does it compare with other funds in the same category?
2. How long has the current manager or team of managers been with the fund and what is their record? Is it better or worse than the previous manager?
3. How tax efficient is the fund? What is the turnover rate of the fund in recent years. This is very important especially if the fund will not be in a tax-deferred account. Make sure you don't buy a fund just in time to have to pay taxes on capital gains distributions.
4. What is the beta (volatility) of the fund and how does it compare with other funds in the same category?
5. What fees are charged and how do they compare with other funds in
the same category?
